Do we actually have to wait until our infrastructure collapses before the EU let us do anything, would they even then?

Thanks you Brown, Blair and Cameron for this wonderful mess we are in. I doubt you lot will have to live in the mess we will end up in.

Heath happens to be dead. And, in any case, the British people were asked in a referendum to back his government's decision and voted
overwhelmingly so to do...
Correct, but the EU of today is a very different beast from the EEC of 1975.
So far I'm not convinced that UKIP are really winning based on their policies, since some of these seem to be changing daily. Still, as long as it's actually that rather than a massive "up yours" to the two main parties then that would be OK. Mind, when it comes to a General Election that's usually what happens anyway. The public as a whole are far too sensible to let a party in solely based on its being "not the current lot".
Remember that when we joined in 1973 the EEC consisted of just 9 western European countries.
Thanks, YMB and Jim, for pointing our to Anotheoldgit the difference between the words 'by' and 'to'. The fact that Cameron used 'to' was precisely the point that I had tried to get through to him, alas unsuccessfully, though not altogether a surprise to me!
Is there an 'immigration mess'
There's a big fuss because the numbers are higher than the PM promised, but legal immigration continues to be net benefit to the country.
The 'mess' it seems to me is the pig's ear the main parties are making of responding to UKIP scaremongering.
I don't see UKIP doing any scaremongering.
I do see a concerned public/electorate though, digesting the latest factual reports from the media.

Well the current fuss is becasue he failed to achieve what he said.

As for 'net' benefits it depends what you mean by that. If you live in an area where the infrastructure is at breaking point, A&E, schools, plod etc etc I dont think you would see a net benefit. If you dont or are employing cheap labour at the expense of British workers then yes I am sure you will see a net benefit.

The problem is not immigration per se, it is about unctontrolled immigration. Controlled immigration is a good thing, you can match the countries requirements and balance the infrastructure to cope and spo benefit the current inhabitants and the new immigrants. Everyone is happy.

But in the EU you cannot do that. And that is the problem.

Of course the other problem is the failed multi cultural experiment of New labour that labourites seem to think could be sorted out, by someone else, in 5 years. People not integrating, refusing to use the language and creating communities that actually exclude others living in the country is very wrong and causes tension. This can and should be tackled hard.

Chilli, you need to understand that europhiles will always accuse others of scaremongering in order to force their way on us! It doesn't need to be fact.
A recent fact from the media was the one showing the net benefits of immigration in fact.
UKIP have always scaremongered, playing on especially older people's fear of change and let's be honest suspicion of foreigners The fact that they are currently running at their likely max rating of 25% doesn't alter that. What has changed is the unseemly panic by their opponents.
Ichkeria's slavish devotion to the Behemoth of Brussels is positively touching!

Did you bother to read my post?

It is pointless quoting figures because depending on where you live and your social status you will see things very differently. It does not mean you are wrong if you see things differently from you.
Strangely though, I don't seem to be seeing 'the net benefits of migration'.
I see a crumbling NHS and primary school classes doubling in size.
If net migration is boosting our economy, why isn't the money being channelled into the two areas of concern I mentioned?
Oh I forgot, we're giving it back to the EU in fines because our economy is growing too fast!!
And this is the kind of people that are walking in!!!!!!!

What the hell is this Country coming too?????

Schon flattern Nigelfahnen über allen Straßen.
Indeed trt:

Like I say, UKIP don't need to spend millions on campaigning, the media are doing it all for them and the electorate are waking up to it, as it doesn't appear to be being addressed.

It does sometimes appear that we are allowing in a lot of people with a propensity for violence.
