Windows File System Error - Catch-22

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate and now when I start, Windows prompts me to run a disk check BUT then the check fails "due to a recently installed program" and Windows tells me to run System Restore to a point prior to the installation

BUT System Restore fails as "there are file system errors" and insists I check the disk before running System Restore

So I am stuck in catch-22

I tried running chkdsk from a safe mode command prompt, but that doesn't work

I'd appreciate other suggestions

Many thanks

Have you got your Windows 7 installation disc? If so, boot from it and run Startup Repair:

Not that I've used it for some time but I used to use a programme called spinrite which was very good. Not cheap though. Boot from it and it is quite thorough in checking your disk and trying to recover stuff.

Once the disk has been given a clean bill of health, any remaining problems might suggest a re-install.

I booted into safe mode and chose System Repair. All seems OK now (fingers crossed)
Ah. Always worth a try. Good thinking.
