Down To Earth

A poster was asking about people who are 'down to earth' on a recent thread. I've been mulling it over and have been wondering what down to earth means to me and I'm not sure I can quantify or qualify what it is.

How would you describe DTE?

This pseudo 'class' divide' is manufactured by those who wish they were living the 'pseudo' better lifestyle.

I would guess that the majority of the 'bluffers' aren't any better than any other person who , taking AB as a vox pox, are any better/worse, more affluent/less affluent than anyone else. Franglais is just a minor irritant we all indulge...

We're all down to earth. It's that simple. People who try to differ are the people who have designs above an imaginary station :)

Ducksie has described what I call a 'social chameleon' someone who can adapt to any situation and fit in wherever they are.

They have a remarkable quality and it is to be admired.

Himself is a social chameleon (ex army officer) but I wouldn't say he is down to earth, he just has impeccable manners. I think being down to earth is far more difficult to categorise because we all have different expectations (because of experience) of people and situations, someone who I might think is 'all fur coat and no knickers' might seem down to earth to others.

Us ordinary peeps have impeccable manners as well.
I have (atm) a Major as a b-i-l.Cousins hubster is a Brigadier atm.I have others who are in the armed forces but since we're taking 'snobbery' ;) )

They have selective manners...believe me :)

'All fur coat and no knickers' became a a reality when on a college trip through Paris one night when we had to stop at a crossing as a lady of the night crossed in front of us just as the wind got up. It was an interesting sight.......

The lads snoozing where very disappointed to miss the spectacle!

I do think this is a very complex question, it is very subjective and many influences will vary the individual answers to each scenario.

I think wealth has lots to do with peoples attitudes. Money changes people, not all, but some.

Like I said in the other thread, my granddad was a very wealthy man, you'd never have known it though.

One thing he said to me when I was young was 'everyones money is worth the same' which to me meant you should never judge anyone. I think that's down to earth.
