Backing Up Photos

I store my photos in folders specific to people, holidays etc. I have a folder for each of my great grand children and I add new photos as and when. Periodically I back them up to a memory stick. The photos are not dated so how do I know which " new " photos need backing up? I currently open the memory stick in one window and have the original folder open in another window, side by side. I then attempt to copy over those relevant photos not previously backed up.
Is there an easier way, please?

Sorry, I am using windows 8 on a desk top pc. I also have picasa to store my photos in addition to My Photos. By suggesting that I use more than 1 memory stick are you saying that I should just download ALL photos every so often rather than being selective and just adding the ones that were not there at the last download? Sounds as though that would be a lot easier? Guess the grandchildren wouldn't have a problem.

Why not use Windows 8 File History. Turn that on ensure the photo folders are included, then the back up will take place automatically. That works best with an external hard drive I would say.
Your photos are dated jayemcee - it's hidden in the metadata associated with the file. If you open the folder containing them you can view the "details". You will get a listing of the photos, rather than thumbnails of them and the listing will contain the date they were taken. If you click on the word "date" at the top of the column they will be sorted into date order. (clicking on "date" againg will reverse the order). You can then select the ones created since your last backup and copy those across.

When you view a folder where you've stored some pictures on your hard drive (or elsewhere), ensure that 'Details' is chosen as the selected view. (Depending upon your version of Windows you either need to click on 'View' or on 'More Options' (from the downward arrow next to the 'Change your view' icon) to select it.

You should then see 'Name', 'Date', etc as column headings. Right-click on one of them to add additional columns to the display, such as 'Date taken', 'Date modified', etc). Clicking on a column heading orders the list according to that heading. (e.g. clicking on 'Date taken' puts everything into date order. Clicking again reverse the list). You can then select the first file that you want to copy across to your USB stick by clicking on it. Hold down shift and click on the last one, so that the whole block is selected. Then drag-&-drop (or copy-&-paste) as normal.
