Hi everyone. About 12 years ago, I had an episode of Atrial fibrillation (AF) which, since then hasn't been a problem. I take a low dose of Sotalol as a preventative. But last night was pretty scary! I did drink 4 G&Ts over the afternoon and I know that alcohol can cause AF symptoms. Later in the evening I started with a fast pulse with runs of ectopic beats and I think that because I was panicking somewhat, this made it all worse. This morning, my pulse is back to normal.
My question is this: Does anyone know whether, if this recurs, I could take an extra Sotalol (an anti-arrhythmic and beta blocker) tablet to try and control it. At the moment, I am on 40 mg daily.
Thanks

Yes you can as a one off, as for example last night, which was presumably due to the excess alcohol. If of course , you were still experiencing rapid pulse and ectopics this morning, then you should seek urgent medical help.

As your pulse is now normal, then you have "got away with it."

So yes, you can, as a "0ne off."

Thank you very much Sqad. I don't normally drink spirits and I doubt if I ever will again after this! Pulse is now down to 65bpm which is normal for me but if it does happen again, and the Sotalol didn't work, then I would go to A&E. When I had it 12 years ago, the hospital did loads of tests and I had injections into my tummy and they said it was probably my 'electrics' and not my 'plumbing'
Thanks again for your reply-much appreciated
Happy New year to you!
LOL...same to you mazzy.
G & T sadly sets off my af. Even one will do it. Every time. I can get away with a glass of wine but any more than that can cause problems. :(
