Virgin have locked the phone so that only their sim cards can be used in it. They will need to give you an unlock code. You could also try an independant mobile phone shop or market stall who will charge you about a tenner to unlock it, or you could use google and find the code via the internet.

What make/model of phone is it?

its a samsung X450
To unlock a Samsung X450
1) note handset imei (find this by dialling *#06#)
2) insert the card you want to use in your handset and switch on
3) at wrong card enter *2767*688xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx#
(xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx = handset imei number)
4) after reboot your sim will work, BUT not after power down

Goto your local market where you'll find a bloke there selling covers and cases for all makes of phones and he normally has a laptop so he can unlock any phone and charge a fiver for your troubles....
