I'm not sure about that you know. I've heard that it's an old wives tale that you need a recommended amount. Just drink when you're thirsty. Listen to your body - it'll tell you how much you need to drink!
apparently one of the reasons we dont drink enough is that we get used to getting most of our water intake from food, so when you're only in need of water, your brain tells you that you're hungry instead. so have a glass of water every time you get hungry, you first need to retrain, then listen to your body.
dave_in_cw, I'm afraid your a little off the mark. In the same way your fuel warning light only comes on when your about to run out of fuel the body only really tells you that its thirsty when your getting close to being dehydrated (most people are in a constant state of low hydration). If you read any books on nutrician, body building or sports books they all say you should keep you water levels up and its essential when doing any sports to maintain a well hydrated body not to just rehydrate it afterwards. Talk to any alternative health advisor and they will always start by asking if you drink enough water. For example if you spend a long time during the day driving (lorry driver, sales rep etc) then you need to drink 1 litre per hour of driving to replace the levels used.
