what does your contract say about the landlord giving notice? It may be not at all..........
-- answer removed --
how long have you lived there? What type of tenancy do you have?
it may be worth re posting this in Law Civil

It boils down to what your lease says

Selling a property does NOT automatically end leases
so in short you go on paying rent to the new landlord.

He - the lucky winner at the auction - has to follow the rules about ending leases and throwing you out if he wants to - the same as the old owner.

No way you could buy it - there bargains to be had at auctions esp if this is a forced sale ?
Blimey if no one has been around to view - it may be a dood deal
You may not have to, the property may well be sold with you as a sitting tenant.
from the auction room get the spec on your house
and see if mentions YOU as a sitting tenant
Sounds rather impolite not to have informed you.
You may have wanted to bid !

It's been listed as a business opportunity for some reason

Sorry, Retail investment not business opportunity
I'd ask the landlord or jus sit tight- he has to give notice in the usual way if he does want you to leave
Is it a flat above a shop?

Perhaps he is disposing of the shop but not the flat?
From what you say it looks a though this is a purely business deal. As you are a sitting tenant it can't be sold with vacant possession. You haven't been given any notice yet. Just sit tight, it would appear to be what it says, an investment. The purchaser will probably not be interested in the flat as a residence, merely a source of income.

It is a flat above a hairdressers, but the board on the front, which only appeared on Friday, does say Business unaffected
It sounds like the owner is selling the fabric of the premises with you and the hairdressers in situ.
Not uncommon in the 'buy to let' market.
Just wondering why auction and not sale. It may be that the property has been repossessed.
