The big ship sails on the Alley, Alley O,
Alley, Alley O, Alley, Alley O,
The big ship sails on the Alley, Alley O.
On the last day of September.
The captain said, 'It will never, never do,
Never, never do, never, never do,' etc
The big ship sank to the bottom of the sea,
The bottom of the sea, the bottom of the sea, etc
We all dip our heads in the deep blue sea,
The deep blue sea, the deep blue sea, etc.
All the children hold hands in a long line. One of the end children puts his arm up against a wall to make an arch. The child at the other end of the line goes under the arch, followed by the others. As the last one goes through, the child touching the wall is twisted round so that his arms are crossed. The 'leader' of the line then goes through the arch made by the child toughing the wall and his neighbour so that the neighbour twists round as the last child goes through. This is repeated using the first verse only until all the children have crossed arms. The ring then joins up by the first and last child joining crossed hands. During the second verse all shake their heads gravely. For the third verse they slowly squat down and rise again, still holding crossed hands. For the fourth verse they all bend their heads down as low as possible, repeating until the end of the verse.
