I understand that Safari ( Apple) is a superior search engine ( or browser) & I have made several attempts to download to my desktop computer ( Windows 7 64 bit) it appears to download successfully yet when I click to open it I get the message '' Failed to open ''. Please can someone advise.

Safari is a browser, not a search engine.

To download it you should be using this link ONLY:
http://appldnld.apple.com/Safari5/041-5487.20120509.INU8B/SafariSetup.exe
Then double-click on the file to install it.

However Apple is no longer supporting Safari for Windows. My link is for the last Windows version, from 3 years ago, which was never intended for 64 bit architecture (which might be why you're having problems anyway).

In my opinion, Firefox remains the best browser for Windows. If I recall correctly (which is somewhat doubtful, as I frequently get ABers confused with each other!) you've already got Firefox. The default search engine (accessed from the box to the right of the URL field) is Google but simply clicking on the blue 'g' symbol (at the left of that box) enables you to switch to the Yahoo or Bing search engines. It also allows you to click 'Manage Search Engines', and then 'Get more search engines', to add DuckDuckGo or other search engines.

Thanks a lot Chris, after two more attempts I have uninstalled Safari & retained my old favourite Sea monkey ( why am I constantly trying to improve the UN-improvable)

SeaMonkey is, effectively, a light (and very fast) version of Firefox. In the days before free wifi was widely available (and I had to use internet cafés when I was working away from home) I had the portable version of Seamonkey on a memory stick; it's a cracking browser!

Firefox 36 is scheduled for release tomorrow.

Ron...I think I am correct in saying that at one time you were using Firefox but, on the basis of your finding it problematic, you then opted for SeaMonkey.

Why not give Firefox another try. You can have as many Browsers as you like, so you can retain SeaMonkey as a back-up.

If you didn't remove Firefox, all you need is to up-date it.

Hope you don't mind if I hijack this thread a bit!
I've got Windows XP and use Firefox, but on lots of pages I get a message at the top which says something like "You are using an old version of Internet Explorer. Update or use a better browser such as Firefox (and some others)". I know this isn't verbatim, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Now I am sure this is all to do with no further support updates for XP, but as I run the latest version of Firefox, is there any way to get rid of this question on pages? Its just flaming annoying!

@sddsddean....If you have Internet Explorer 8 then (as you have indicated) your XP is now unsupported by Microsoft. Furthermore, Google has also withdrawn support for IE 8. Consequently, I am wondering if you are using Google Search on your Firefox Browser and Google has established (as it can) that you have an out-dated Operating System and is targeting you for advertising purposes.

I avoid wherever possible to avoid anything to do with Google, be it as a Browser ( Chrome) or as a page for Internet Seaches.

What version do you have of Internet Explorer and do you use Google for Internet Searches. ?

Yes, I usually use Google as a search engine, but don't use Chrome. I've got IE8 too, though I don't use it.

Personally, I would opt for another Search Engine and, if you still have the problem, post a separate question in the Technology section, with a view to a few of Answerbank's Top Techies becoming involved.

Incidentally, I feel sure that whiskeryron will forgive the digression from his original posting.

Most of my Searching is done with Bing and I have my default Browser (Firefox) set to 'Do Not Track'. I know it is Not a 100% guarantee, but it is far safer than using Google which can put cookies into your computer that can establish your E/mail address to pass on (or even sell) to third parties. However, I also have available to me, 'Duck Duck Go' which is an excellent Search Engine and there is a 100% guarantee that there is No Tracking back to one's computer/laptop etc.

There is very little in it and Safari gets points for being supported on more operating systems.

However it is bogus because they have Safari on Windows even though it has not been supported for three years.

Running on XP aught to be considered irrelevant for any browser.

The user reviews on these kinds of sites are invariably biased by "True Believers".
