Plugged it in tonight and it made a 'gluck' sound and nothing lit up. It's about seven years old but how can it die like that and what can I do to revive it?

Mine did exactly the same earlier today. I took the battery out and left it out for a couple of hours then, put it back and thank goodness the laptop is working again. I'm not sure whether this would solve your problem but it might be worth a try.
Sorry, I spoke too soon . It's on the blink again .
My old laptop did a similar thing. The cooling fan had expired and the internals were overheating and the laptop automatically cut out as a safety measure I suppose. Do you hear the fan operating when you boot up before it dies on you?

Retro.
Didn't notice anything, and now of course, I can't get it working at all. Will take it to a repair shop today.
Thanks both for replying.
