What creature would dig a round 2 inch hole in the flower border of my garden. Its round and goes down about 3 inches and then veers off to the side.

Yes rats are more likely to come out at night, the dogs and children are not a problem, they just need to make sure that the poisons are placed underground or in a place inaccessible to the dog and children, due to a taste deterrent in the poison (Bitrex) a child would spit it out very promptly, the same is true for most dogs but not always, either way they need to be...

I have just been out and measured the diameter of the hole. It is just under an inch and a half.

I think it may also be possible that the tree holes may have been enlarged by a woodpecker, while extracting grubs from the holes.

How condescending can you get? I did not say 'rats as big as cats' I said a rat as big as a 4 month old kitten. Rats do not bother me so the description was not born from Hysteria but what I saw. I've lived in the country most of my life and know what size rats can get to without having to look on the internet,thanks all the same ;-)
