web hosting recommendations?

I want to have a website through WordPress, but will need webhosting. Can anyone recommend a host, or warn of any to avoid? I'll be doing a few, for various bands, so will need something more than the absolute basics, but I don't know how much space it's likely to require. How does one know?!

Look at the small print of any website hosting services. Do you have to pay extra for "search engine submission"? I paid for website hosting thinking I'd do the submission myself without problems. My site did not show up in searches. Contacted hosting company and they said I had to pay for their own engine submission!
