Gout is caused my excess production of uric acid in the body which collects and crystalises in the extremities, most usually big toes, but it can be any joint, including fingers. The crystals grate on the bone - you know the rest!
Contrarly to old wives' tales it is not the result of rich food and drinking port - I am a tee-totaller, and often suffer!
You can get specific anti-inflamatories, and your GP may prescribe, plus drinking loads of water helps to dilute and flush the crystals.
You can also explore your diet - some foods can set off an attack - for me, bacon, sausages, and mince meat are guaranteed, so try elminiating things until you find what is causing your gout, and then resolve to live with it!
Hope this helps.
