just thinking of going to portsmouth to work and looking studio flats in town and a thought struck me.
if i got sacked and had no job and had a flat to keep and pay £450 pcm for that flat , would housing benefit pat flat for me ? a 47 year old unemployed single man.
and if not then he would be homeless , right ?
i am from belfast but want to know what way the system works in uk

nightmare to find cheap lodgings or , well, acceptable decent digs in portsmouth. i have had a few people offering single rooms £100 a week in a council house .?
seems like portsmouth is really bad to find any where.

DD as a single person you can only claim housing benefit for a 1 bedroom property. The maximum amount of benefit you can claim is limited to the LHA (Local Housing Allowance) for the area the property is in.
Housing in Belfast is a lot cheaper than in Portsmouth so benefit will cover the full cost of rent in Belfast but only a % of it in Portsmouth.
That is why people on benefit in high cost areas like London are now being forced to move to cheaper areas.
Some people from London are being moved out to places like Norfolk where benefit will still pay the full cost of rent.
If you own a house in Belfast ( or anywhere in the UK) but move away to work you can not claim any housing benefit at all if you lose your job. You are just expected to move back to your own house.

diesil you should read through some of your other posts: one minute you don't want to leave your wife and family to go work for £900 per week in south sussex , next you are single bloke on benefits, not long ago you were looking for digs in London as you'd been offered a laborers job, a couple of weeks ago you were mega constipated on an off-shore oil rig - no wonder people get confused.
retro and ummmm LOL a few weeks ago i did not want to leave my kid !! also last month i was offerred employment as an advanced scaffolder supervisor role in stratford !! also a few weeks ago i got started on an oil platform in the dutch sector of north sea which is my usual position , i am also a qualified offshore firefighter for your information :-)
when i came back from rig i was offered a years work in portsmouth southampton for £20 an hr but i was only getting 48 hr week so i was considering it though it was not good money for me to travel and pay digs etc .
when did i ever say i was unemployed ? pls read the posts correctly then yous would not confuse your heads.
