what is the difference between XP Media Center and XP Home edition

I believe the media center is designed to be hooked up to a large screen and can play and record tv programes.

It is supposed to replace your pc, tv and vcr unit with one combined unit.

Word isn't part of any version of Windows XP. You need to look out for Microsoft Office being bundled with the PC too to get it.

Word is part of Microsoft Works, usually bundled with pcs.

I have Works, and it is totally compatible with Office Word - can read Office Word documents, and can be read by Office Word.

don't argue with Ethel Stevie, though you should know better. If ever Microsoft office is given away with a new PC I'll eat my hat. Works on the other hand is basically useless and that's why they give it away with everything, Kellogs included

XP Media Center is XP pro with an extra application bundled in (unsurprisingly call MS Media Center).

The Media Center app lets you watch movies, play music etc and is designed to work through your TV, but I reckon most people never bother to use it.

camionieur - I agree entirely with your comments re Microsoft Works EXCEPT nowadays the word processor really is EXACTLY the same as Office Word.

It is THE same thing. It is the only redeeming feature of Works. My guess is that word processors are not particullarly tricksie, and in any case I much preferred Word Perfect.

Can we have a minute's silence for the demise of WordPerfect?

Hammer - I reckon you're right. My laptop has a tv card thingie, so if I hook it up to the aerial I can watch and record tv. How often have I done this? I have three tvs - so never!

And if you are a family (I live alone) imagine the arguments.

There are two versions of MS Works

MS Works - does NOT include MS Word but does include a word processor. This is the one given away free with PCs.

MS Works Suite that DOES incluse Word, but not the latest version (2003) but an older version (2002)

There are some differences in interface of both the windows otherwise the product is same.Xp home edition is considered to be more user friendly as compared to XP media center.
