Yes it "was" the Wigan Casino (along with the Stoke Torch and Blackpool Mecca amongst others). Alas, I was just too young for it all...
I seem to remember a programme on a couple of years ago presented by Trevor "Insufferably Smug" Nelson when he went there and was somewhat supercillious & condescending about the whole scene - it's impact and influence. Bit too raw & Northern for a snotty Rare Groover like him I s'pose - though I do like a bit of that too, I must admit. At its best, there really is no better music to dance to than NS.
Though Acid House and Acid Trance come close...
northern soul was a complete lifestyle from swopping rare or hard to get vinyl 45s through to dancing the night away at the many all-nighters to be found throughout the north west of england.the true birth place was the twisted wheel in manchester which opened it's doors in 1963 as a soul live spot and dance hall.wigan casino didn't exist until 1971. neither did the metro in blackpool precede the twisted wheel set up there by the same people who opened the original house in manchester.all true northern soul devotees know where the real heart of northern soul is.and wigan isn't it.just out of interest i believe "the wheel" is re-opening.a cultural experience you should try before you knock it
