Grid filled, 11 excised items stared at, and stared at, and ...
Can anyone provide a hint about the "oeuvre"? Is it a book or what? I've
ruled out 12 Angry Men and Die Meistersingers, but that's all I can think of with 12 roles.

If I'm right it would also fit in with the title, but based on only a handful of clues it's hard to be sure.
I'd be happy if my guess was correct, though. But feeling sleepy now, so I'm afraid I can't be any more help.

I think the father of the latest EV winner can be excused a late night!
Besides, I don't think there are any real rules about not giving things away when it comes to EV puzzles. I wanted to be careful because I was basing my thoughts on maybe three or four clues solved, so didn't have a lot to go on.

Hello all,
I was in a similar position to jockie, but had a suspicion of what the oeuvre was, from about 4 extracted sequences of letters. I found the statement by which the grid entries were defined very helpful to completely populate the grid. BUT that still left me with some extracted sequences that were not altogether obvious, particularly 31a, 11a and strangely enough 7a.
It was then a process of working back from the 12 principal roles to deduce the extracted sequences! I must admit that I would not really considered there to be 12 principal roles! Rather a total of 12 roles, unless of course I am missing something or somebody!
I rather agree with jim360, being subtle is far better than a direct answer, it is also more challenging for the contibutor!
Congratulations to your daughter djawhufc, an excellent prize for a potential calligrapher!

You're quite right, Cloverjo. And a list of the names Walt rejected can be found at:

Apart from the principals, the other characters in the film were the Forest Animals, the Fly (which followed Sleepy around when he wasn't being felt by Jim360), the Raven and the Vultures.
