I need to find someone in the US. All I know is her first name, the city she grew up in, the city she lives in now and the kind of work she does. Where do I start? I'm in the UK.

unless she has a VERY unusual first name (i.e. you could phone all the law firms in Chicago and ask for 'Frogmella')or a VERY unusual job (can't be that many taxidermists in Denver) you've got no chance basically. sorry and all that.
rja is right, I'm afraid. All of the online directories and search services that I know of require the last name. On the bright side, maybe she will contact you based on the info. that she has. Or, do you have any acquaintances in common? If her current city happens to be a tiny village of 50 people, you could contact anyone in that town to see if they recognise your description. If 'none of the above', perhaps this girl wasn't your 'destiny' after all !!! Plenty o' nice girls in the UK....who have better first names than Frogmella.
Try typing all four of the words you have (first name, occupation, home town, current town) into Google and see if any Web pages come up. If she has a resum posted online, for example, it could very well contain all four of those words somewhere in the text, and thus Google would find a match. Or you could try looking up the name of the high school in her home town, and look at that school's online alumni directory to see if her info. is there, or get in touch with another member of the school, if the matter is sufficiently important. The only problem is that most cities have more than one high school - the larger ones have dozens.
Further to Buffy's answer try looking at schools in www.classmates.com - the US site that friendsreunited copied in the UK
