Approximately what percentage of people pass their driving test first time ?

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has only recently started to collate information on pass rates by attempt. I cannot find any quoted figures other than approximately 55% of Practical Test applicants are sitting the test for the first time with a further 35% on their 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Figures they have published show that the current average pass rate for all Practical Test applicants is 43% (46% for men and 40% for women). This can be further broken down by age. For both sexes the pass rate is highest for 17-year-olds (56% for women and 60% for men) and lowest for those 50 and over (29% for both men and women).

The pass rate for the Theory Test is around 57%, down from 69% since the introduction of the Hazard Perception Test in November 2002.

Bear with me on this....

If just over half of all applicants are taking their first attempt is it reasonable to assume that they are responsible for just over half the passes, ie. 23%?

Does the better/younger pass rate distortion also then mean that this figure should be slightly increased 'cos more youngsters take the test than oldsters?  Say to around 30%.  I, too, will be interested to see what the final 1st time pass rate comes out as.

I think my driving instructor told me it was about 14%, not entirely sure though!
