A friend of mine had a coil fitted about three years ago and her periods stopped. Only a few weeks ago she has started suffering heavy bleeding. She saw her GP who examined her she pressed a point just above her navel my friend said it was extremely painful. the GP said she could feel a lump there and is sending her to have further checks at hospital. I am worried for her. Has anyone else had this problem, could it be something to do with the coil.
I used to have a coil, albeit 40 years ago. I seem to remember my periods were heavier and actually fell pregnant and now have a wonderful 38 year old daughter . Coils have probably changed since then. I do remember though that they didn't suit everyone.
It is dangerous to assume that heavy vaginal bleeding 3 years after the insertion of a coil is directly related to that gynecological procedure.
It might be, but other causes need to be excluded and your GP is correct in referring her for a consultant opinion.
Other causes may well involve benign conditions such as fibroids or perhaps uterine infection. Malignant disease must also be excluded.
Thank you sqad, I think it was the sudden prolonged bleeding after three years since the coil was fitted that gave her the idea it was connected with that. She is hoping to hear from the hospital within a couple of weeks. She plays tennis quite a lot and has also been watching her diet for a while, and I mentioned she had lost weight which brought up the question of her health, apart from this she said she feels ok.
