Just a small observation, I thought I'd share.
My shed is like New York city central for spiders, cobwebs everywhere.
Anyway, I went in there today to get a bottle of engine oil off the shelf and when I took it outside, I noticed a medium sized spider, which I shook off onto the grass and watched it run away for cover.

About 5 minutes later I saw a shiny black wasp (approx an inch long) which had apparently pounced on the spider and appeared to be dragging it backwards through the jungle of grass.
What amazed me was, that how it managed to run backwards through the grass with such ease!

It's the Anoplius family of wasps that specialise in spiders, mainly large and black like yours. At the opposite end I have a lace web spider outside my living room window who handles normal wasps with ease. Quite scary really
Though not as scary as yours DB!
That is a mean looking weapon at its rear end.

Thanks to all for the info.

I guess finding a house spider outside on the lawn, was like manna from heaven to the wasp, which seemed to home-in on it pretty quick!
