looking to buy another car,I know the reg number,what is the best way to check that it's not been in an accident or got finance still on it

Checking VIN against Reg

Is there a way to get a VIn number via the reg - About to buy a car but the VIn doesnt match up the Reg, thanks

Does anyone know if these checks will work for every reg the car has had? I'm looking at a car at the moment but it has a cherished plate, do I need to do separate check for every number it has had or...
