HDD error on a Toshiba RD-XS25 DVD recorder.

Whenever I switch the DVD recorder on it displays 'HDD Error' then closes down again. Does anyone know of a way this can be fixed. Can I use my laptop to run a diagnostic and if so how do I do this? I...
