Going to a 3G phone (in UK)

I'm on an O2 contract and about to get my free upgrade and I think i'm going to get the Nokia 6680 which is 3G. I was told I won't change my contract, just I'll be charged more if I use 3G services...

My mobile phone as a MODEM

I have a Nokia 6600 and when I use is via infrared as a modem I get a connection speed of 9kbps. Is there ANY way of increasing this? Thanks
