Blurred and blotchy videos

My laptop had problems so I reinstalled Windows XP Professional. Since then I find that I cannot properly see videos which have been forwarded to me in emails. I use ntl webmail and open the video...

If I leave my laptop plugged in to the power source, will it cause any damage? Or would it be better to switch it off after use.
