spacing in word 2010

for some unknown reson my spacing has gone from "No Spacing" to "Normal" I prefer No spacing but cannot get a new doc to open up with it as default. whats the trick please.

Word 2010 saving in docx

In my last Word application(2003) documents used to be saved as .doc, but now my new Word 2010 seems to save by default as .docx and when i send it as an attachment some people are unable to open it....
