Why is it considered acceptable to accept the use of acronyms such as 5C (fifth columnist), TROB (the right on brigade), TROP (the religion of peace), and so on?

Such usages are obviously aimed at avoiding censure as provocative phrases. They are also cowardly, as their users try to hide their meanings from newcomers, whilst emitting dog- whistles to those in the know.

If some of these terms were spelled out honestly, I suspect they might be frowned on by Mods.

Indeed Khandro.
Don't forget once upon a time AH was a paid contributor on AB, during its inception.
His job was to answer musical questions, seeing as he was a music journalist all those years ago, may still be.
Who really knows?
1ozzy, why the reference to AH once being a paid contributor? There were several, it is not unusual for start up sites and I can't see the relevance.
Nor me.
Well done Andy..paid or not ,you must have done a good job otherwise this site might not be here now .
Just think if Andy had not helped out in the Pioneering days we may have been deprived of the Finest Sat night entertainment you can get,
..... and Sunday morning if you can get away with it. cheers Andy.
TTT comes with many annoyances.

The acronyms
The offensive names (Jimmy Krankie etc)
The Rhyming slang (Arrrgg!!)
Repeated slurs (Corbyn communist spy etc)

But when he doesn’t post (such as when he is suspended) we all miss him and the site loses something.
Gromit, don’t talk on my behalf, I don’t miss him .
"Miss him", miss who?
etch. see post @ 12.17
Not familiar with the Blackadder II Chains episode then dannyk13?:

Queenie: You see? We’re having a good time already! We’ve completely forgotten about those chaps in prison, haven’t we? (spoken in a tone with which — and she looks around like — no one should dare disagree)

Percy: (gets a joke in his head; seems rather pleased; puts on a fake curious face)
What chaps?

all: Pbbbbffffff!!!!!!!
Etch //Not familiar with the Blackadder II Chains episode then dannyk13?://
No, not a programme I watch.
Sorry Anne
Ok, thanks gromit :-)
Acronyms aren't against Site Rules. I would rather they weren't used in original posts but we can't exactly ban acronyms. The more they're used the more understood they will be, as is language. If we had a problem with particular acronyms then we would add them to the swear filter. For example F-F-S is edited by the swear filter to read "For Funks Sake".
What is your opinion on referring to to those who are on benefits (especially those who are unemployed)as WSS, meaning "work-shy scum"?

Chambers Dictionary defines that use of "scum" as, "derog a worthless or contemptible person or such people."

There are any number of reasons for folk being on benefits, unemployed or not being able to work.

How is it acceptable to refer to any of them as, "work-shy scum"?
The strike is over, Corby... Get a job
Corby, I think the clue there is in the words 'work shy'. That surely differentiates between those who are on benefits to prop up their income and those who doggedly refuse to work and abuse the system and the rest of society by taking all they can get for free.
Perhaps it folk used the convention of writing what they wish to abbreviate in full the first time it occurs in a piece of text with the abbreviation following it

For example. Crazy revolting Answer bankers. (CRAb). That woold solve the problem and maybe make people pause a second to consider whether they really want to be associated with the words it represents
Do you know the reasons for each person being in receipt of JSA or ESA? Unless you do, how do you know who the, "work-shy" are and even if you did, would you refer to them as being "scum"?
