I know, Tilly. It's a nightmare, isn't it? You can't tell the poor dogs that it'll be over soon, and it's ok.
Who needs fireworks, anyway? When I was young we had sparklers and a couple of Catherine Wheels.

I don't know if Pink Floyd will work with mine. Might try something like that.

I loved fireworks as a kid, but I hate them now, not least because of how they frighten animals. However, organised bonfire displays are the way forward imo and not selling to the general public any more. I can but dream, can't I ?

For anybody who is on Facebook, there is a page on there who is campaigning to limit the use of fireworks to traditional dates. Their petition got it debated in parliament and the organisers were on TV. They are now sending press releases to local papers and there is also a thread listing the dates and times of displays so that pet owners can be prepared. Their latest success is working with a local airport which is next door to a rescue kennels. The airport were going to host a concert ending with fireworks. Through friendly negotiation, they got the display moved to further from the kennels and the actual display redesigned to remove the loud fireworks and substitute quieter ones. Thanks all! One dog watches them out the window but one goes bananas!! This is the first time they are both under the same roof and when one goes it sets the other one off.

So its damage limitation for now as guy fawkes is just around the corner- aside from
The fact you getthe odd idiot letting them off randomly anytime at this time of year and the dogs go mental!!

I may try the plug in- not expecting miracles just hate seing him

One 1g Melatonin tablet plus a thundershirt works for me (and the dog).

I think we have had this conversation before but from the last week of october to the last week of november, my dogs have 3 doses of melatonin a day of 5 mg per dose and you wouldn’t know they have had anything. If things are bad I top the dose up. If there are no fools still letting off fireworks then we have a break and start again just before christmas until new year is well over

I know we have talked about Melatonin in the past woofgang. Are yours big dogs? I'm talking about terriers, one 8kg and the other 8.3kg.

Actually I only take 1g myself when I need a bit of help getting to sleep.

Wow that explains it. How 1g works on me then is a miracle!

It has a very different effect on dogs from the effect on humans.....generally much less sedating and a very short active life. I have also observed (as have other people) that in dogs it is metabolised much faster when the dog is stressed, no idea why.

I think I say this every year but it never ceases to amaze me the way 'elf & safety govern our every move these days, but still these damn fireworks are available for the general public to buy and drive our horses, dogs and other animals crazy.

I agree horselady and once again after the event there will no doubt be horror stories in the press of innocent cats and dogs being tortured by yobs with fireworks.

I am with Ratter and others on this. When our dog was a youngster she was petrified of fireworks and other loud noises. We have persevered over the years by not reacting ourselves and gradually she has got used to loud noises, fireworks, and even the doorbell and no longer freaks out. Must say though that I have sympathy for people with animals that do react badly, and indeed the animals themselves. It was necessary for us to help our dog, as we have a golf club nearby that has a display at times and a Council run annual display that is only a mile away from us every year.
