Why is it howling?

Why do dogs howl? My next door neighbours dog has been howling for the last half hour.

No, they seem to be home, it's always howling. Maybe it's lonely. It's strange though, I never see it in their garden.

It barks too, so if it is the neighbour, I can't imagine what he/she is doing to the other partner.

Perhaps it is singing along to the radio or tv. I had a puppy who used to howl whenever Charlotte Church was on tv singing or any other classical singer. I called him Charlie Church because of this.

What dog owner allows their dog to howl and bark at this time of night? The poor thing must have been shut out and left alone.

that's true - my dogs howl at certain music. I've been told that it's because certain pitches hurt their ears, but many people find it amusing.

Hi Velvetee, I've got a dog next door who barks and howls all of the time, grrr. It's a very old Beagle. In my mind, I feels the dog's in pain, but I have chatted with my neighbour and he reasures that she just wants to go in the house. unfortunately, his wife is houseproud and refuses the poor dog. I have suggested euthanasia, so end poor Holly's misery, but he said the missus won't let me. Please don't think I'm being judgemental, but if more people got in tune with pets, then would instinctly know what is the best solution. I, also, don't want to condemn Holly but at 15 years, she's seen the best of her life, if you listen carefully you'll hear her howling.
