Hi, we have a 9 month old Patterdale Jack Russell Cross (Max), he is lovely the sweetest little dog in the world. A bit of a little terror sometimes but nothing bad, he likes to chew but don't all dogs and he loves to play.

The reason I am posting on this is just out of interest really, when we walk max people always ask what he is, and when we tell them he is a patterdale on a few occassions, people have kind of taken a step back when we have said this? Is there something bad about patterdales that I dont know?

I understand that patterdales are generally used as working dogs but the chap we brought him off just kept Max's Mom/Dad (I cant remember which was the patterdale) as a pet and it seemed like a perfectly nice dog just came running up to us to say hello, like Max does now.

Maxy isnt showing any behavioural issues, he is just a bit too friendly, I just wondered if anyone knew much about the patterdale breed?

Thanks!

I just googled in patterdale terrier and came up with loads of sites - best you choose which one you like and read up. from my experience - confident little dogs with no concept they aren't the size of a rottie - generally good with childen and as a house dog - strong hunting instinct - coat easy to care for -tough, fun little dogs and definitely not wimps! having said that I've come across very difficult ones (worked in animal welfare for donkey's years) but the reasons for these dogs being handed over because of 'behavioural issues' was not the fault of the dog but the way it had been treated. your chappie sounds a nice friendly type but just be aware he's going into his 'teenage' years soon as may test the boundaries a bit. good luck with Max - he sounds as though he's lucky to have found you guys.
of course what I meant to say was ' he'll soon be going through his teenage years and will try and test the boundaries a bit.
(got a skype call through and just pressed submit answer without checking - silly me)
My friend has a patterdale and she is one of the nicest little dogs I've ever met. She's very friendly and obedient, in fact my friend's wife has just had a baby and the dog has learned very quickly that she is not allowed near - if the baby starts crying she gets up and leaves the room. When it comes to other animals she's not so nice though, she has to be kept away from other dogs and has killed a good few wild animals (including a pheasant which was still alive when she started to eat it!).
