How often should I get my dog's anal glands drained? She is a year and a half old Jack Russell/Patterdale cross and she is mainly fed on Burns.

She definitely needs it done now as she is scooting (as I've seen it called on here!), but how long before she is likely to need it doing again?

Thanks.

Has she been wormed?

Anal glands very rarely need emptying unless they are fed on very soft food which does not push out the glands naturally. Sometimes they are deep seated though and have to be emptied by a vet or a groomer. Get the vet to check and make sure she is wormed.

Thanks lankeela. The grooming parlour told me it needs to be done about every 6 weeks.....but then they would wouldn't they!

My little Lola stayed with my mum while we were on holiday a few weeks back. She fed the dog all sorts of stuff and by the time I got my doggy back she wouldn't eat her dry food without adding brown rice cooked in stock to it (thank you mother!). It's taken me about a month to get her to eat her Burns on it's own again.

Thanks for reminding me.....she's about due for worming so I'd better sort that out.
Don't know what you normally use, but you can buy Drontal online much cheaper than at the vets. Try hyperdrug or vetmedic pharmacy. You can buy them singly and p and p is free for wormers.
Vetmedic seems to be the cheapest at present.

It could be she was scooting because she had something 'stuck' that was eventually passed.
