Petition to change law for cats

It is 2am so I am unable to write a coherent chunk of text.

The following link explains what changes are needed to make motorists obligated to report hitting a cat on the road.

I know that some local authorities scan dead cats to see if there is a microchip which will indicate the name and address of the cat and its staff - but many don't. Maybe that is something else that could be considered.

Well mine have taken slavery to a different level.

We now have CCTV, which we can see from the TV in the bedroom. So the OH flicked it on last night and I could see one of the cats sitting at the back door. SO I got up, came downstairs and let it in.

Half an hour later, during the adverts he flicks on the CCTV and I see another one of ours by the front door. Off I go again.

The third time he went to flick on the CCTV I told him not to bother cos I wasn't getting out of bed again for the wretched cats. After all, they HAVE GOT A CAT FLAP.

Slightly off point, I know. I think it is a good idea, I would hate it if one of mine went in such a way. Although like Wolf says, it's incredibly difficult to police.

An interesting thread. We are ambivalent about cats. We have a border terrier to chase 'em off the vegetable garden and bird feeders but the idea of being cruel is reprehensible. Years ago I accidentally ran over one and stopped to help it but it was dead. The police were notified in case the owner contacted them but they didn't seem interested.

Where I live, the best people to contact if you see a dead cat and can't trace the owner are either of the two vetinary practises in the town. Also if your cats go missing. Only a small town and people tend to phone the vets when pets go missing. They make a note of any dead cats reported to them.

I think if we had CCTV security our cat would take great pleasure in putting on shows for us in front of it!! She adores the television and watches it avidly in the evenings!!

Eric's just today ready to go out independently (ie without me hovering over him as he hadn't had his advocat so didn't want him tearing off up the garden to roll in fox poop or something). He got stung by a wasp the other day in our yard bit. He's been going in and out the open door, I'm pleased he can finally be a proper cat but he does look remarkably tiny when he's out there :-/

Ah bless him!! He's a ginge isn't he? Ginger cats are lovely, even though they are often a bit thick!! ;o)

Our ginger cat 'William' was always getting stung around the motuh. He never learned!!!

I will definitely keep an eye on that Lofty and should he develop such a thing take him to the vets! ;oP

He is a ginge, I got a video on FB of him playing fetch like a dog... I can't work out if this proves his intelligence or his stupidity.

Cat owners aren't legally responsible for their cats activities unlike dog owners.
Dogs have to be kept on a lead on most roads whereas a lot of cats roam free.
It is sad to lose a pet but I can't see any advantage in drivers having to report running a cat down.

If a cat becomes an animal under the Road Traffic Act, does this mean I can now sue the owners of all the cats who have run out into the road and caused me to swerve to avoid them?

I tried getting my two to play fetch - but they just looked at me as if I was nuts.

hc - realistically I can't see the new law being implemented, but to have a pet go missing presumed dead is a horrible experience.

The answer is simple.
Either keep your cat indoors or teach it the green cross code.

I think it would be nice to have a facility in which they could be taken to a vets so they can see if they're chipped and let the owners know, I would have appreciated that.

You can do that where I live. Basically because it's such a small town I suppose and everybody seems to know each other.

I think that if local authorities scanned dead cats for microchips it might save much anguish.

I love my two but cats can be pests and bullies - they ruin gardens (never their own), eat (or just kill and play with) birds and small animals and they pick fights with other people's cats - even to the stage of breaking into the other cat's home and stealing its food. They can do some painful damage to any human who dares to try and get them to do something that they do not want to do.

I understand why some people dislike cats - but I find them interesting to live with .... giving it some thought I am not sure that 'interesting' is the right word .... ..

My mother was a 'cat person' so I grew up with them, and I lost count of the number of times I found a half-tortured rodent or bird left on our doorstep. Killing for food is one thing, but they seem to take delight in torture. Our furniture when I was growing up was ruined, depsite scratch posts, and depsite their grooming, they stank. Plus, the litter tray was in the kitchen. Friends who have cats invariably have the litter tray in the kitchen. Why, for the love of god, would people want their cat sh****g in their kitchen?

Flip Flop - my two have their litter tray in the bathroom. A couple of times I have had visitors using the facilities but hadn't shut the door properly - Frankie just stomps in and used his litter tray whilst glaring at the human who is using the WC next to it. It freaks folk out.

Lottie - I think it is meant to keep an eye on you once you go senile, so if Mr Lottie suddenly has you implanted with a GPS transmitter you will know that he thinks that you are losing the plot.

I am sure that I am not the only one who thinks that this lady in the You Tube clip is nuts.
