We've only had him for four years (got him as a pup after Tara) and about six weeks ago he started having epileptic fits. Golden Retreivers seem to be
quite often epileptic. Then the fits came more often and today he had a CT scan which confirmed a brain tumour.
I'm just devastated. Tomorrow the surgeon will explain our options, but it doesn't look good. Apart from the cost (a few thousand - I'd pay if it made him better) the outlook even after that is not promising.
I'm afraid decisions will have to be made.
Life's a bitch.

What devastating news-both for you and for Sandy. Your love for him will guide you in making your decision.
Been following your post tara and I know just what you're going through as do most of the people who have posted. The worst thing with Max was that he had the operation and made a good recovery then five weeks later he lost the use of his back legs and though it broke my heart to do it I knew what I'd got to do. Please don't hesitate when the time comes it's hard but in a few weeks you gradually forget about the pain and remember the good times you had together.

We learned today that the tumour is large and within his brain behind his eye. Surgery is at this time too risky, radiotherapy a chance to reduce the size and then operate.
However, after talking to my own vet ( who wouldn't put his own dog through that), I think the dice has fallen. Tomorrow we'll go to the clinic to see how he is and whether he can be taken home or not. Either way it won't be long.
I am so sorry, but you are making the right decision for Sandy's sake. Hugs.
we are here for you tara XX
I am so sorry. I know exactly how you are feeling but you know it is the kindest thing you can do for Sandy. I hope you manage to get a bit of time with him before then end. All my best wishes.
Life certainly is a bitch, especially when it forces a decision like this. good luck.
So sorry Tara, I recently lost two of my dogs at an old age and that felt bad enough, but you are doing the right thing for him.

He's going to have the radiotherapy!
The tumour is about walnut size and is pressing on the brain. With the therapy the tumour should shrink, making more room for nerves, circulation etc.
The vet was optimistic, and today we took him for a short walk in the clinic grounds. After that I couldn't do it, he was so alive.
It means no holiday this year, but i've got to give him this chance.
The clinic is the Vetmed Univ. in Vienna. If they can't help, nobody can.
Hopeful news Tara, I hope everything turns ok for you and Sandy
