Dogs are good deterrents (drastic though), I've only seen one cat in my garden and I think she must be new to the area, doubt she'll be back now she's seen the bear. When he's crossed rainbow bridge I'll get some sprinklers put in I think, or OH will get his way (he won't) and concrete over the whole space.
Cat poo stinks no end... If I had that problem, I'd look-out for the cat and when it shows up I give it a good spray with the garden hose. Do this two or three times and I'm sure the cat'd stay away.
jomfil, so your cats were indoors all the time? if not, how do you know they did not crap on your neighbours garden?
What would be the point in taking a cat to a rescue centre "where they have microchip readers" - they would just read the chip then return it to your neighbours
Cats are territorial, so waste is often used as markers to advise other cats.

First of all, you need to remove all the traces of faeces, and then cover the area in undilted Jayes Fluid.

Next, cover all your borders with mothballs, that means the tops and bottoms of all adjoining fences, the rood of your shed - anywhere a cat can climb over.

Maintain the mothballs, they will last a couple of weeks before you need replacement, and hopefully the cats will be detered.
Bednobs, except when taken out on a lead yes they were in all the time. When they wanted to kill things there were always the mice.

So you had brilliant cats who walked on the lead but were excellent micers!!!! Mmmmm right
I think jomifl is winding everyone up because you would not have mice in a home that had housecats. Mice smell cats and soon vacate the premises.
friedgreentomato , No I do not trap foxes or badgers or cats however the law permits you to trap cats and fox but not badgers. now stop acting like a silly child and leave it!
ClaryS, "Mice smell cats and soon vacate the premises."
as an ex pest controller with 13 years experience I can assure you that the presence of cats will not drive away mice, you would not believe how many properties I frequented to deal with mice that also had more than one cat.
Ratter - how insulting!!

I am entitled to express my opinions as much as anyone else especially someone as patronising as you!!
a powerful water pistol on stanby, much quicker than rushing for the hosepipe , and with practice more fun.
^^^^ standby, damned keyboard.
as an owner of 3 cats - use a water pistol. Cats bury their poo - if it's lying on the lawn, it's not a cat.

This talk of releasing a pet cat into the wild is dreadful, as well as depriving the owner of a loved pet, as is taking a known cat to a rescue centre. That's theft.
... and yes, you do have mice and rats where there are cats. I can vouch for that.
i wonder if you left a tray of cat litter somewhere in your yard they would use that?
then at least it would be easier to manage?

i know you shouldn't have to, but if they were trained at home with a litter tray they may just use out of habit.

i have heard they dont like pepper

you can also get electrical impulse gadgets that deter them

dont know any details though

ClaryS

hang on a minute....cats are very clean and bury their poo.

Sorry Clarys but that's not true .My neighbour over the back garden has a houseful of cats.they are always pooing in my garden and have destroyed new plants with there wee. I would never hurt them but I do detest them, worthless creatures.
Quite a thread you started here Chessington.
my friend has trained her cat to always use the litter trays in her garden and house - for exactly this reason - so it doesn't go and poo in neighbours yards

unfortunately most cat owners cant wait for the day they can get rid of the litter trays
I like Triggs idea best and am ready to invest!
I can only go on my experience of buying old properties with cupboards full of mice poo, once our cat was living there no more mice were ever seen (alive).
