apparently if you start early they put up with it later on
On another note: I said to my labby - you stinky boy !
and then I went to the stairs and screeched 'up!',
and the dog went up stairs went into the bathroom and jumped in the bath - and looked at me as if to say 'stinky but good boy'

Yes. If a cat or dog is fed correctly they should not need their teeth cleaned. I have had show dogs and pet cats for more years than I care to remember and have never cleaned a tooth on any of them. My vet is so good that when I took a newly picked up rescue in today to have a jab to stop her coming in season he even gave her a spray with some flea spray he had there rather than try to sell me some.
My vet once suggested I give my cat toothpaste and he gave me a free trial sachet of chicken flavour feline toothpaste that you just smear onto their lips and they lick like mad. Never bought it. That cat lived until his kidneys failed at 14 and never had any oral issues.
I once gave my dog Pedigree Dentistix, I dug them all up last Autumn when I was lifting the potatoes from my vegetable patch. Her gnashers are in fine form.
