Remember when we could be sure of hearing one every year....and we'd compete to be the first?
A rare sound now sadly.... :-(
I expect the small birds on which it relied are rather pleased, though?
As gness says, it's a rare sound these days, unlike many Years ago.
Best bet is to visit Cuckoo Clock manufacturers :-))
Thought I may have heard one over the weekend, but when I stopped to listen, nothing, so not certain.
I've heard the best way to hear one is to mimic the sound of one, if there is one near by it'll soon come to see who the intruder is. Don't know how true that is as my ability to mimic a cuckoo call is sorely lacking.
Can't remember the last time I heard a Cuckoo call.
I hear it every day, many times, here in Hove. I thought it was wonderful yet unbelievable when I first heard it last week. It quickly dawned on me that one of the little boys next door has a cuckoo whistle which he spends most of the day blowing. But the very first time he did it he got me:-)
Aww...LB.....my daughter bought me a selection of bird whistles....but if I use the cuckoo one my neighbours just say....Told you so..she's cuckoo..x
You can hear them from my bedroom in France G......
I know you, Shoota....you'd get me there then employ a little French kid to sit under the bedroom window with a whistle.....☺
No - I got my own whistle....

This was the first one I've heard for a few years, I must admit. I hope it wasn't some twit with a whistle!!
Oh I hope it was, Treetops...and not Shoota trying out his pulling skills...☺
The call does get a bit wearing when it goes on for heur après heur après heur......
Question Author
"apres heur, apres heur"? Is that anything like apres ski, shoota?
Lol - that depends what goes on in your bedroom Tree.....

Nuff said!! Time for lunch.
Previous years, I've noticed that I usually hear them when the bluebells are out, well they've been out a while now but still no cuckoo's :(
