Border Collie and other working dogs. I feel sorry for the ones that have been bred to look stupid and as a result can't breath or walk properly.

I am very surprised that of the only 4 answers to name a breed (apart from me) all 4 go for border collies. Highly intelligent and highly strung. Need to have a purpose. I see lots of people walking all sorts of pet dogs where I live, the representative is nowhere near all border collies, in fact I can't recall any - or do you all mean they are your favourite but you don't have one?

My first favourite would be a German Alsation Shepherd Dog. My father was a Police dog handler and I grew up ,as a little lad, with the greatest loyal friend I could wish for. Police Dog Joe.
My next loveable friendly, greedy dog was a Golden Labrador Retriever called Oscar. Known to eat anything including food . :-)

Our dog was bought as a tiny pup at an RSPCA place. She was some sort of cross between labrador and something else (I later decided that it must have been a crocodile; she had needle teeth as an infant).
She was very intelligent and learned to sit stand lie, stay, come etc on both words and whistles - but she was also very strong-minded and ambitious to be top ***. She worshipped the family and readily respected our friends once she had checked them out for good smell and good behaviour.
She fortunately had a soft mouth; she was very defensive of us, her flock.

Sighthounds and lurchers. I had a whippet/(probably) greyhound x...she was sweet, affectionate, shy and gentle. Probably not terribly bright but she was good company for me.

Always found them clever, eager to learn, but yes they need a job.

Have competed in obedience and agilty with success.

For simply being big, daft and soppy: English Setter.

Japanese Akita - fiercy protective, annoyingly independent, very aloof.

I also love the Bull Mastiff. Great sense of humour, sulky, needy, gentle and very protective. The one drawback is the drool, it's disgusting.
