Why are some animals born blind then as they mature gain their sight?

I think it is something to do with the gestation period as the animal would be more at a disadvantage predators / hunting etc if it were prolonged so they sort of get the baby to a stage and then give birth and one of the things that can develope later like walking is eyesight
