Why do dog's eat grass

Can someone please tell me why do dog's eat grass i have been told they do this to make them selves be sick and i have often wondered why they do it my burt basset has been his normal robust cheeky self to day and he started to eat grass when i had him out for a walk before so i just wondered if he was feeling unwell but he seems OK i am just curious as to why dog's do this thanks love megan07
