Answerbank - what happened to bold

Why when I post a reply or ask a question is there now no longer an option for BOLD or for COLOURS to make the main points stand out as this was an excellent option you had - why has it been removed

The bold & coloured text functions were provided by using JavaScript which any decent browser (such as Firefox) doesn't support because of security concerns. (Microsoft have, belatedly, sorted out Internet Explorer; IE7 has had this facility removed).

So, many people couldn't use the 'rich text editor' anyway and eventually, as IE7 replaces earlier versions of IE, nobody would have been able to use it.

Hi aurelia,

< b > *text* < / b > for bold

< i > *text* < / i > for italic

< u > *text* < / u > for underlined

To show the format I have put spaces between symbols < b i u > < / > so remember to type them together, don't forget the forward slash after the < on the closing format. You can use either lower case or capitals for: B I U / b i u, it doesn't matter, both will work.

Thanx for all the replies - did read the ~Ed's blog but didn't know that Rich Text Editor was what I was asking about as it always worked for me when using before

owzat - do you mean you hold the shift on the b before typing to get bold - I'm not too sure what you're symbols mean

Hi aurelia,

If you type in what I have, but do not put any spaces in, the format for bold, italic and underline is the same. The only diff in the opening and closing format is the foreward ( / ) slash after the left facing arrow ( < ), in the closing part of the highlighted (bold, italic or underlined) text.

It does not matter if you use upper or lower case for the B, I or U ( b, i or u ).

< b >*text* < / b > or < B > *text* < / B > but, no spaces, from the first < to the last >

The but, no spaces text was done exactly like below, without spaces from the first arrow < to the last arrow > in the entire phrase...

Try it on a post, but remember to "preview" first to see that you have typed it correctly, as it will show exactly how it will look once posted. If it is not right, you can then correct it on the "edit" facility.

but, (you know what I am going to say) Without any spaces!!

Also, the above phrase is not directed at you, but at the moron who posted above this.

For anyone looking in on this thread (especially aurelia), the above comment, was aimed at one of the omnipresent saddo's that plague this site. It was not to be intended for the questioner. Having been removed by AB, the offending post leaves my last thread looking rather out of place...
