but there is something niggling away in my mind and I cannot for the life of me recall in which book I read it.

A family who had almost no food (I think it may have been a war situation and was probably in another country). The incident I am trying to place is where their dog turns up at their door with a leg of lamb in his mouth which they devour with relish. On two more nights the dog brings them meat which they guess has been purloined from a butchers shop. Then no more! Where did I read this? Anyone know?
