I see no reason why he can't be both.A fine painter who was one colour short of a pallette.
I would go along with the idea that Seor Dali was a mixture of both - a Gutter if you will.

Nunius.

Hmm. The unbelievable skill of the guy just blows me away. I have the big book on him and was browsing for ideas...how did one person produce so much fine stuff?

I just can't work out from it all whether he was making a point or having a laugh.

I remember smudge was talking about drifting off to sleep and having a strange dream. I remember reading some stuff about this picture and some othe Dalis: he was very interested in hypnogia (sp): what happens to your mind when you're drifting off to sleep or just waking. (I get this myself: drift into very strange, loose thinking, just before drifting off). Dali constructed a device (a stick, with a chinrest, and a spike in the chinrest). He would look at an image (in this case, a pomegranate with wasps), drift off with his device, and then paint the hypnogogic image (in this case, the tigers).

I think all Great Artists (in all art forms) are 50% Genius, and 50% Nutter, without it they would be like us ordinary folk,or should I say YOU ordinary folk! LOL
Genius.
Go to see the exhibition in London - can't remember the exact gallery but it's on the south bank of the thames. near the London Eye.
His wierd stuff is only a very small part of his work.
Someone once told me that when Dali moved away from his family home, he sent a letter back to his father which contained only a smear of semen and a note which said 'Now I owe you nothing'. That made me laugh.

lol, I liked that.

By the way I use the term 'nutter' in a relative, pejorative sense. Unless someone comes up for the actual weirdness of the real world when you look at it square on, I'm quite sure Dali could label us all 'nutters' and himself sane.

And if anyone is getting disappointing rejections from Uni's just now: Dali was rejected by his main Uni choice also. Doh!

sad you cannot decide yourself, why on earth you need to label anyoneas a nutter or genius and not just enjoy thier work, or not. so it appears
