Love 'The Shadow of the Wind' - and the follow up 'The Angel's Game'.

Another one of my all time favourites is 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' from the author of 'The Kite Runner'. Quite unforgettable.
Jodi Picoult - I have read about 15 of her books on family drama and I wouldn't like to pick out the best, they are all brilliant
Stargazer, yes, 'Rebecca' - I'd forgotten that one.
Never forgetting "What Katy Did" and "Little Women"
Gosh Adrianben....if you held a gun to my head I could still only narrow it down to two.....

J.L.Carr. The Harpole Report.....may just win over his other work..or not.
Thomas Hardy.....Tess.

Many, many thanks!

You've just reminded me that I bought 'Diary of a Nobody' in a secondhand bookshop but I've never got round to reading it. I'll try to start it soon!
John Wyndham - Chocky in particular
Stephen King - The Shining
Like Chris I think Three men in a boat is extremely funny but as much as I've tried I cannot get into his other travelling book, Three men on the Bummel.
Did any of you enjoy Captain Corelli's Mandolin? I was given a signed copy when he visited this area but have never been able to get far into it. It was a best seller so don't know why it does nothing for me.
Dylan Thomas' Portrait of the artist as a young dog. If you knew absolutely nothing about him and read this, you'd say: 'This chap has a way with words'.
I abandoned Captian Corelli, thought it was boring.
Another best seller I never got into was The Time Traveller's Wife..........
The Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor is a brilliant bok. Also The Book Thief by Marcus Zuzak but the best book I ever read for sheer unputdownableness was Papillon by Henri Charriere.
Most memorable : Ayn Rand. Atlas Shrugged.
Typing error The Book Thief is by Marcus Zusak
Arrrgh....Diary of a Nobody! I have three copies. The one book I wouldn't put into storage when I was homeless. Brilliant!
'Vulcan42':
Three Men on the Bummel is a bit of a curate's egg. i.e. it's good in places but it doesn't work as a whole.
Love the books by Nevil Shute apart frm On the Beach
