Howard Spring ,My Son My Son.
The most memorable book I've read for a long time though was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.
Dylan Thomas! Under Milk Wood........whatever Sandy posts mark for me too. :-)
Dostoevsky
Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah and Sky Burial by Xinran both amazing true stories. Life in China during the last Century is a shocking revelation for those who know little about it.
Although my favourite book is by Victor Hugo, I'm not keen on his other works.
I do like Wilkie Collins novels, and I'd plump for Armadale as my favourite of his.
I can read it over and over. I have never tired of it.
i think
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
My favourite author is Michael Connelly but my favourite book is Riotous Assembly by Tom Sharpe.
Favorite book is probably To Kill A Mockingbird. It was the first "proper book I read back when it came out in 1960 and I must have read it a hundred times since.
Wainwright...........Walks
I loved The Glass Bead Game by Herman Hesse
The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck
plus lots of others listed by other posters!

Favourite children's (?) book Alice in Wonderland
The ragged trousered philanthropist robert tressell
Charles Dickens-The old curiosity shop
Hard times
Great expectations
Savages by Shirley Conran
First Christmas present to my second wife was Paul Gallico's "The Silent Miaow".
A very difficult question....I would generally go for individual works rather than an author; as several posters have said, you can love one book but not like another by the same writer. But I do go back time and time again to Lord of the Rings, Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers (I'm just an old romantic at heart!) and Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series.

A similar question on music might be interesting.
I like Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Peirs Anthony... and many more
Tom Sharpe - Vintage stuff
Anything by Ian Rankin, Bill Bryson, Stuart MacBride, Peter Robinson, Peter James, Tom Sharpe, Leslie Thomas.
Funnily enough, Hasek.
This to me is like my desert island discs question, narrowing fav records down to 8 was an impossibility - One book and author would be impossible for me, as my fav changes with my mood. I love Keith Waterhouse's Maggie Muggins, Office Life, Bimbo, and I also love Tom Sharpe, any of them - JP Donleavy The Ginger Man, any of the vet boos by James Herriot, or Police books by Harry Cole, for a fright I like James Herbert or Steven King. At the moment I'm reading Fear Nothing by Dean Koonz - it's a little bit different and I recommend it.
