What about this one?
Every home did have one. :-)

All 'Allo 'Allo fans would recognise the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies.
Guernica isn't really one you recall all the details of. What was the fifth one in the book?

I'd add Girl with a Pearl Earring as well. Or Starry Night.
Lol - the painting that was done by Leftover da ***.....
Bittchy!

the trouble with The Scream is that there are several versions. Same for Sunflowers.
Yep. For me, it goes something like this:

1) somebody names the picture
2) you can picture it in your head and knows who painted it
18:38...Marilyn????
lots of Marilyns too, so the image you have in your head might not be the same as other people think of.

Yep, but if somebody put the image in front of them, many people would be able to say "That's Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol". The name might not be perfectly right, there may be other images, but it's still recognisable ...
I am particularly taken with the paintings of David Hockney the brilliant Bradford lad. His work carried on from, and in some ways reflects, works and the legacy left by the tragically killed Eric Ravilious in WW2. Hockney is now into his 80s and still producing stunning work, some on an iPad! Two early works of his are recognised everywhere, everything else he has painted or produced is unrecognisably his. Both Turner and Constable are very much admired and indeed copied in both the Us and Europe. Les Grenouilles are particularly keen on Turner.

Yes, I love Hockney, but his paintings are not among the world top 5 most recognisable paintings in the world. My criteria:

1) Visualise from the name (hard to check!)
2) Roughly name from the picture
3) Name the artist from the name or the picture
You should have mentioned Andy Warhol.
I deliberately did not look up the name. I maintain many people, if either said "Who was the artist of Marilyn Diptych?" or showed the image and asked "Who is the artist?", would say Andy Warhol. It is massively recognisable ...
