A dying man leaves him the first clue to an ancient mystery which our hero must uncover...
It's not a Great book, but is a rollicking read, even if some of the solutions to the puzzles are a lot less difficult than the characters find them to be. Some of the author's claims are a bit dubious too. I found it to be a bit like a far-fetched action film - I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, but after I'd finished i started to think "Hang on, surely..."

there is a book about the real code - ie. in de vinci's paintings there are clues about jesus and the bible etc. such as it is suspected Jesus(forget all the son of god rubbish) was screwing mary magdeline(dunno the spelling) and may of had a child with her...these kind of things. I only read the back but it looks very interesting.
the da vinci code makes you question your faith by bringing into light certain things we never dare ask ourselves. it mostly revolves around the opus dei (which is a catholic sect as well, founded by Msgr. Josemaria Escriva).
it's recommended that you first read 'angels and demons' and try to delve into a bit of research bout opus dei tradition.
