Prepare yourself for a long and heated arguement about the bible....... My own particular favourite is Pillars Of The Earth by Ken Follett.
Arabian Nights is up there by various authors,as is Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. Of course the bible. My fav.the art of war,Tsun Su.
The Jolly Postman or The Jolly Christmas Postman
And I am being serious about the postmen books - they're fabulous for young kids. THey have little letter inserts that you pull out whilst reading the story. Briliant stuff.
I found Howard Marks books quite good
The Womens Room by Marilyn French.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt is also good
that one book by that one author was VERY good
Harry Potter books!!!!!!!!
"Nineteen Eighty-Four" by George Orwell.
Not sure, if it is the best book in the world, but my favourite is The Little Prince (Antoine de Saint Exupery)
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I liked it so much I named myself after the author!
this reply is just so outdated already, but if you're looking towards an established set of so-called 'best books', you might want to check out the 'Canon' of Literature. There, you'll find the books regarded as masterpieces. Not to be trusted though, as more contemporary listings are already available. The Canon was just especially popular among the Literary crowd during the onset of New Criticism as a way of analysis. There really is no 'best' book. You, yourself, are the only judge of that. My personal fave thus far, is Lolita.
