i would like to take some black and white photographs of my children in local ancient woods for my husband's birthday as he loves black and white pictures but i dont know where to start we have apanasonic camera with auto focus and thats about it.can you by film which when taken are black and white?

Yeah you can just buy a roll of black and white film from Boots or Jessops or somewhere like that.
if you have the use of a computer you could take the pictures in colour and turn them black and white in an image editing program if you have one, might be a bit cheaper than black and white film and it's processing costs and waiting time. Don't know if it's changed in the last few years but most places have to send the films away to get processed and it takes about a week so take that into consideration if you have to have them done before the birthday. Sounds like a lovely idea by the way :)
As clarabel says u can get the effect using a computer and changing the color to black and white (greyscale) also u can get an effect called Sepia which gives the photos a browny look which is reminiscent of photos taken decades ago...but be warned its addictive... good luck with the shoot.
