Anterior Cruciate Ligament
6 Answers
My son had an operation on his anterior cruciate ligament about 8 weeks ago and it seems to be getting worse not better
He is still unable to straighten it fully. He went to physio yesterday and had to sleep downstairs last night because of the pain.
4 weeks ago when he saw the consultant he managed to withdraw some fluid and reduced the swelling but the knee is still swollen
He is due to see the surgeon again today
How long does it usually take to get back to normal
TIA

depends what you mean by normal.........after surgery for ant. cruciate lig repair, the knee is NEVER normal. it may feel normal but certain weight bearing exercises never return.
For example.
6 weeks post op....normal motion of the knee.
12 weeks..LIGHT jogging and swimming.
7 months should be back to normal as defined above.
That is if all goes well. The above dates may be made invalid should there be complications and your son seems to have fluid which will lengthen the healing procces and prolong the dates that i have given.

Further to all this
I have just had a call from my son - it seems he is now going to need another op. The surgeon was unhappy about the recovery rate - or lack of it. He also said there was no way the knee should be so swollen still and that - even if he tried to drain it - he would not get enough off to return the knee to a normal size
